Aotearoa/New Zealand singer-songwriter Lukas Mayo, also known as Pickle Darling shares the title track “Laundromat,” which finds echoes of bittersweet emo and power-pop peeking through their folk formula. It’s accompanied by a colourful, cartoony lyric video put together by Mayo and their partner Christiane Shortal, which helps to enhance the song’s nostalgic flavour.
On the track, Mayo offers: “I had the album title before I wrote this song, strangely! One of the initial ideas of the album was to write like, “mundane hymns” and this was one of the first I wrote with that in mind. I was going to write everyday kinds of songs about the world from the perspective of various objects, and this one was from a washing machine’s perspective. It’s a pretty terrible concept that I’ll probably revisit one day when I’m out of ideas.”
Their forthcoming LP Laundromat is out this Friday, June 16, 2023 on Father/Daughter Records.
