Last month Tāmaki-based post-punk quartet Ringlets unveiled their first new music in over a year, the boisterous new-wave anthem ‘New Life’Listen HERE. Praised by the likes of Rolling Stone AU/NZ and The Listener upon its release, now the band divulge an eccentric mixed-media video to match, available to watch on Friday, June 14th.

Edited by snot a.k.a Keria Paterson, the video features an array of footage captured across the bands various performances and recordings dating back to early 2023.

“The music video showcases the band’s charismatic personas, as well as highlighting their collaborative and performative history as a group.” said Paterson of the video, “Combining freaky stock footage with a plethora of mixed media footage from the band, it was a thrill to bring together a video that showcases the song, as well as celebrate their touring achievements from the past year.”

“After a busy percussive start that recalls the underrated English post-punk Duds, “New Life” explodes into a wonderful new wave style that vibrates with life – new life – and demands that you play it again immediately after one listen ends.” – Conor Lochrie, Rolling Stone AU/NZ.

‘New Life’ is also available now in-store and online as a limited edition 7” thanks to Leather Jacket Records and Flying Nun Records. ‘New Life’ is nicely paired with an exclusive, vinyl-only b-side; the sardonic and brooding ‘Scam Me‘, prised from the depths of Ringlet’s shimmering unreleased catalogue. Purchase Here.

‘New Life’ invites listeners into a new narrative while nodding towards the band’s evolving journey. “New life, best life, fast life, new life,” Ringlets beckon audiences to delve deeper into the chaotic nature and unfamiliar stomping ground of a new life.

Praise for New Life:

“‘New Life’ might be their finest work yet, a new-wave inflected jam that demands to be played again as soon as one listen comes to an end.” – Rolling Stone AU/NZ

“One of last year’s breakout indie artists with their self-titled debut album, Auckland’s Ringlets are here to deliver more of their jerky, abrasive post-New Wave sound with three minutes of anxious vocals and thought-provoking lyrics. And some real sonic punch in its last minute.” – Graham Reid, The Listener

“Scrappy and tightly spring-loaded, Ringlets sound positively cherubic on ‘New Life’, kicking up a dust-storm of fractured rhythms with dashes of buoyant melodics as vocalist Leith Towers intones “New life, best life, fast life, new life”” – Under The Radar

“‘New Life jitters and jerks like a lost Parquet Courts single, all twitchy nerve ends before the verse smooths out the cracks with Leith Towers’ melodic lead vocal and chugging electric guitars.” – Doubtful Sounds

About Ringlets:

Ringlets really are one of the most exciting bands Auckland has produced in a long time.” – Rolling Stone AU/NZ

Ragingly bright post-punk quartet Ringlets emerged from Aotearoa’s musical ether in 2021; carving out space with their distinct blend of delicate wit, grit and evident sonic technicality. With a highly durable, machine-tested rhythm section (Arabella PoulsenArlo Grey) and two of Auckland’s leading lyrical & melodic consultants (László ReynoldsLeith Towers), Ringlets have been fast-building a solid reputation.

Catching the eye of former Pitchfork editor Chris Ott, Autumn 2023 saw the band release their eponymous debut under Ott’s label Mutual Skies. Produced by De Stevens (Office DogErny Belle) and the band themselves, the 10-track album is a riotous and tightly sporadic introduction to this exciting musical offering from Tāmaki Makaurau. Since then, the four-piece has been sharpening their toolkit with numerous performances across Aotearoa, supporting heavy-hitting internationals such as UK indie-rockers Sorry, and seminal punk force The Damned.

May ‘24 will see the band release their first new music in over a year.

With thanks to Flying Nun and Leather Jacket RecordsRinglets are stepping back into the light with New Life; a sharp, punchy post-punk anthem with precision and technicality to boot, it is the band’s 12th song and their latest single.

With the undoubtable potential to shine in 2024’s booming alternative sphere, only one thing is certain; Ringlets can only remain our best-kept secret for so long.
