Today, Spencer. releases his 4AD debut single “Automatic.” Built on top of a retro drum groove and hypnotic bass line, the song is a magnetic gem full of confidence and swagger, an absolute earworm begging for repeat listens. The much-buzzed about 20 year old genre-defying artist melds R&B in his velvety vocals, hip-hop in his off-kilter beats, funk in his effervescent basslines, and moody indie rock in his reverb-soaked guitar. The song is paired with a video chronicling a young love from its beginning to end directed by Danica Arias Kleinknecht. The new single is off a forthcoming 2020 project.
In late August of 2018, during the same weekend that Spencer. dropped out of college to focus on music and relocated from his native Rochester, NY to Brooklyn, he also released his breakout single “Want U Back.” Within a whirlwind three weeks, the track amassed over one million plays on Spotify alone, was picked up for airplay by Beats 1 and BBC Radio 1Xtra, and earned immediate critical praise from both sides of the Atlantic. The Line of Best Fit proclaimed Spencer. “a prodigious talent” and “one of this year’s most promising prospects,” while Paper called the song “stunning” and praised its “enveloping atmosphere of melancholy and longing.” An EP of the same name followed for which Lyrical Lemonade tapped him as “one of the most promising young talents to hit our pages in quite some time.”
The music that Spencer. writes, records and produces nearly entirely on his own comes alive as a strikingly tight 4-piece band that bucks any expectations of a bedroom R&B artist alone on stage with a laptop. Spencer. is on tour now with Gus Dapperton for an extensive 30-date North American run hitting LA on October 14 and NYC on November 10. Full list of tour dates below.
