Today, Tkay Maidza reveals her original holiday song ‘Nights In December’, filled with woozy synths and an 00’s R&B meets tinsel-pop refrain. The song coincides with her current arena tour opening for Dua Lipa in Australia and follows Tkay’s recent US run with Billie Eilish.
Tkay says of ‘Nights In December’ –
“I thought it would be cool to make a song that captures the feeling of a new relationship but using wintertime in New York as the inspiration. I had a trip where I spent a winter in New York, and it was really beautiful so I almost wanted to recreate that feeling in a song.”
‘Nights In December’ follows a vibrant recent JPEGMAFIA remix of ‘High Beans’ and a feature on Babyface’s new album Girls Night Out. Her 2021 EP Last Year Was Weird, Vol. 3 represents the culmination of a 3-year-long, 24 song-strong genre-bending trilogy exploration of Maidza’s own African-Australian experience. Across Vol. 3’s 8 tracks Tkay encompassed everything from pop to trap to R&B which earned a 2021 ARIA Awards win for Best Soul/R&B Release and a 2022 NME Award nomination for Best Solo Act In The World.
