COURTNEY BARNETT – A Potted History
The recently announced first show in New Zealand for Courtney Barnett has been met with quite the feaverish hubbub… high time we shared a bit more about this rising star -in fact she’s so good, NME thought she was a Kiwi.
“Barnett’s musical strength lies in her lyrics….
Her songs take listeners through fleeting observations that,
when observed as whole, form powerful and introspective compositions”
-NPR
Over the past 12 months 24-year-old Melbourne singer-songwriter Courtney Barnett has received international acclaim for her remarkable ability to make ‘suburban banalities’ and ‘mindless procrastination’ endlessly compelling. Courtney has quickly caught the attention of music lovers and critics the world over with Pitchfork describing her as ‘wordy, articulate and dazzlingly witty’. We just love her for that subtle Aussie twang…
“Shows off a mind that’s racing at a hundred miles an hour”
-NME
“[Barnett] writes matter-of-fact tales that unspool like barstool revelations
and sound like some hybrid of Kimya Dawson and Kurt Cobain.”
-Rolling Stone
Courtney’s music featured strongly in 2012 end of year lists, including Spin, The Music, Rolling Stone (USA), Pitchfork, Fuse, NPR and NME . “Avant Gardener” has been a firm favourite on the bNets and has recently made her American late night TV debut on Jimmy Fallon with her band The Courtney Barnetts. You can also catch her performing a Take Away Show for La Blogothèque below.
After a sold out a tour of the UK & USA and supporting Billy Bragg on his Australian tour earlier this year, Courtney will be heading our way for a not to be missed show at the Kings Arms in Auckland this September.
“Songs that match terse yet wildly unpredictable storytelling with rock that
works up the scrappy momentum of the Velvet Underground.”
-New York Times
“Great things to come”
-Stereogum
“A perfect summary of the earnest freewheeling and rambling with
that makes music from this end of the world just so great”
-The Guardian UK
“An impressive songwriting talent”
-Uncut 8/10
