After sharing ‘Lost Weight, Perfect Skin,’ the pummeling and almost tribal first single off Lower’s debut record Seek Warmer Climes, it would have been easy for people to consider them a punk band (or post-punk, goth-punk, industrial, or any of a variety of diminutive labels), but Lower are so much more. Their new single, ‘Soft Option,’ shows a far greater depth of musicality than mere punk force. You can hear slivers of New Pop, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Bauhaus, Scott Walker, and even artists like The Thompson Twins or The Church. It shows the band’s ear for unorthodox melody that simultaneously challenges and rewards the listener as does the subtle yet intense accompanying video, directed by the band’s own Kristian Emdal.
