Yaeji is back with a hot new club single titled ‘booboo’ – the first new music from the NYC-via-Seoul artist, producer, singer-songwriter, and DJ in a year. After a brief period of retreat from the club, while she recorded and released her 2023 critically-acclaimed debut With A Hammer, Yaeji is back firmly behind the decks with this floor filler.

Last month ‘booboo’ debuted during Yaeji’s Boiler Room DJ set (watch here) at Brooklyn Mirage, followed by a live performance of the single during her performance at Pitchfork Music Festival. The unapologetic and carefree club bop is a result of Yaeji’s recent period of deep introspection. On ‘booboo’ Yaeji returns to the club with a new found self-liberation, locked in to her connection with mind, body and soul, surrounded by her friends and the underground dance community that inspired her to begin making music in the first place. On ‘booboo’ Yaeji also reflects on 2017, the year that her break-out hit ‘Raingurl’ thrust her into the mainstream spotlight, noting in the lyrics:

You know the one time i wrote a banger that goes like
‘Rain make it rain gurl make it rain make it rain gurl make it’

You know that i wasn’t really ready at the time
‘Rain make it rain gurl make it rain make it rain gurl make it’

You know how the growing pains just don’t stop yeah
‘Rain make it rain gurl make it rain make it rain gurl make it’

You know what, i think I really know the joys of life
‘Rain make it rain gurl make it ’

Speaking further on the single, Yaeji explains:

“i think with anything – a little breathing room, a little break – distance makes the heart grow fonder.
with the overpowering attention that came from raingurl, i took a break from clubbing, dance
music, and the underground scene, but in that time away from it all, it’s allowed me to gain new
perspective and a deeper appreciation for it. this year is the 10-year mark for many of the parties
my friends and i used to go to, so booboo coming out now feels like full circle moment. and with
my closest friends—who i’ve witnessed grow as DJs and start their own labels, throwing parties
& having fun, all while creating a radical and safe space, it’s been so fun being their cheerleader
and now rejoining them in the club, front right! “

Yaeji will premiere ‘booboo’ to a UK audience later this month with performances at Lost Village and Field Day, following her fall 2023 appearance headlining the prestigious Pitchfork London at the Roundhouse.  Following the release of her much anticipated and critically acclaimed debut album With A Hammer, Yaeji
reemerged in late 2023 with the single and music video ‘easy breezy’. The single arrived in between the North American and European leg of Yaeji’s With A Hammer tour, which Pitchfork noted saw “[Yaeji in] full-force superstar mode, singing and dancing to sleek choreography with finesse that could easily put several bigger stars to shame.” After a whirlwind year of landmark moments, including presenting at the Crunchyroll Anime Awards in Japan in March and celebrating the one-year anniversary of her debut album With A Hammer, Yaeji is on the other side of a period of deep excavation. Inspired, aligned, full of joy and hope: her faith in music and humanity once again found on the dance floor.
