LIQUID’S iconic XL Recordings catalogue available digitally

Over thirty years since their debut single on XL Recordings, Liquid‘s legacy is clear. In 1992, Richard Russell made his first signing to XL Recordings with Liquid, who debuted on the label with ‘Sweet Harmony’, an anthemic track that has become one of the most iconic dance songs of all time and remains a staple on dancefloors worldwide.

Liquid went on to release five EPs and one album on the label, including the beloved Future Music EP and Liquid Love EP The latter, originally released in 1994, features the classic title track along with two additional tracks: ‘Interference,’ which leans into trip-hop and captures the quintessential mid-90s sound, and ‘Liquid is Liquid (Red Jerry’s Epic Journey Into Dub),’ an eleven-minute dub-house exploration. Other releases included ‘One Love Family’, ‘Closer’ and ‘Time To Get Up’ – notable for its Liquid House Mix that perfectly marries breaks and house, earning its place on numerous iconic 90s mixes, including Paul Oakenfold’s 1993 set at Soak in Leeds. These projects have been unavailable to a new generation of ravers, as they were only released in physical format – until now.

Starting 31 January 2025, XL Recordings began a month-long digital release of Liquid‘s catalogue on the label. Each week through February (January 31, February 7, 14, 21, 28), one of Liquid‘s beloved releases has been made available digitally, culminating with today’s worldwide digital release of ‘Closer’. This reissue campaign celebrates Liquid’s legacy and highlights their influence during one of dance music’s golden eras.

ABOUT LIQUID:

If there was a national anthem of rave, it would be 1991’s ‘Sweet Harmony’ by London dance music pioneers Liquid. The irresistible layering of classic house over rolling, breakneck beats remains an all-time classic that still smashes it at warehouses and clubs across the globe, featured in Saatchi Gallery’s synonymously named exhibition ’Sweet Harmony’ and continuously present across screens worldwide – most recently a key presence in soundtracking JD Sport’s 2023 December advertising campaign. Following their pioneering and experimental second XL Recordings release – The Future Music EP – featuring the atmospheric and breakbeat dub classic ‘Liquid Is Liquid’, Liquid’s Eamon Downes and Shane Heneghan amicably went their separate ways. Currently based in Rome, Eamon continues as a solo artist building Liquid’s reputation for composing and creating floor-fillers and continuing to achieve commercial success while maintaining critical acclaim.
