Ben Woods — formerly a supporting member of Wurld Series, Salad Boys, and main force behind short lived group, Fran— is a musician and songwriter currently based in Christchurch, New Zealand. Woods’ music exists in a limbo between considered lo-fi sounds and tuneful emotional prose.

After spending the first half 2018 writing and funding his upcoming debut “Lozenge”, mostly through bar work and selling his body to medical science, Woods voyaged south to Dunedin to record his album with Steven John Marr. Marr— also known as one half of the psychedelia infused trip-hop act Doprah, and for his production role on Kane Strang’s last two records—takes both recording, mixing, and mastering credits on the album which is set to release his debut in this upcoming summer.

Purple Pilgrims is the experimental dream pop project of Clementine and Valentine Nixon, sisters who were raised in Hong Kong and New Zealand’s South Island by a family with long-running musical roots: their great-grandfather, Davie Stewart, was recorded by Alan Lomax. In 2011, the sisters returned to China after the Christchurch earthquake and began making music. Their self-titled debut 8” of ethereal, fuzzed-out folk arrived that year on PseudoArcana. The duo toured with artists including Ariel Pink and Gary War, with whom they shared a split album released by Upset the Rhythm in 2013. After signing to LA’s Not Not Fun Records, they returned to New Zealand to make their first full-length. Recorded in deep wilderness on the western side of the Coromandel Peninsula, 2016’s Eternal Delight marked a more streamlined, cleanly recorded version of Purple Pilgrims’ transporting sound.

girlboss is Lucy Botting, Darian Woods, Douglas Kelly and Olivia Campion. They live in Wellington, New Zealand. Leading songwriter Lucy Botting had been taught to sing other people’s music since the age of six. She wanted this to be her project. She learned guitar, and started writing and recording under the name girlboss. The music was drawn up from the mists of reality television shows, childhood movies, and mixtape tremolo. It had a confidence that was also soft, centred around Lucy’s vision.

Texas music blog Gorilla vs. Bear first picked up on an early demo, Mrs. Doubtfire. A video was released for Kind Face, a song about a comment given to Lucy by a stranger. She put together a live band with Darian Woods (from their previous project, Wet Wings), Douglas Kelly and Olivia Campion (Yumi Zouma, Estère). In early 2017, the band’s name was a near-constant on Wellington gig posters. girlboss opened for whoever good was in town, but especially women with guitars: MADEIRA. The Beths. Fazerdaze. Frankie Cosmos. girlboss released its debut EP Body Con on March 16, 2018: a small run of cassettes through Wellington label Ball of Wax Records.

“The songs are flush with bright melodies and groovy rhythms that twist together like a corkscrew.” – Nick Fulton, i-D magazine

“Fullbrook’s hushed yet forceful songs, packed with obsessives and resilient loners, demand your full attention.”
–
Q Magazine

“She is always looking uneasily toward the next line, or moving toward mysticism. In sentimental contexts, she generates lines of wicked ambition.”
 – The New York Times

“It’s hard not to be captivated by Fullbrook and her intimate brand of storytelling, as she draws you in with quiet charisma and charm.”
– Consequence of Sound
